Buddha Head - Patinated Cast Brass
Mahayana Buddhism first came to Indonesia around A.D.300 at a time when Indonesia was part of the Indian Empire and flourished mainly in the islands of Sumatra and Java. Buddhists and Hindus did not get along well in India, but in the fertile, lush land of Indonesia, the two religions lived side by side in peace, blending and borrowing from each other. That is why you can see statues of Buddha in some of the temples in Hindu Bali. This patinated cast brass head was made in East Java.
