Laksmana Headdress - Part of a Ramayana Dance

This stunning headdress is worn by Laksmana, brother of King Rama in the Wayang Wong dance dramas. The dancer wears the same costume as the Laksmana leather puppet (Wayang Kulit).

The major part of the headdress is covered with black cotton velveteen. The gold trim is made of excised water buffalo skin with set-in glass jewels and glass mirrors. Each tassel is held in place by a wooden peg on each side of the headdress. The image below shows the gold painted wood Garuda head at the back. The Garuda is a mythical part man and part bird that is the vehicle of the God Vishnu. The headdress is built around a woven bamboo cap which you can see in the image below, as well as the top of the headdress.
