The role of Sita the Queen is found in the Wayang Wong masked dance popular in the island of Java. Wife of Rama in the Ramayana Story, the great Hindu epic, Sita wears a crown and flowers in her hair. She is the symbol of love and fidelity and of the material world. Created in the Muslim Island of Madura, the ancient Hindu dance traditions from the time when it was a part of the Hindu Empire are still kept alive. The wood mask is hand carved and hand painted wood.
