Magic Mask Crafted in the Island of Madura
This very unusual Magic Mask comes from the Muslim Island of Madura, off the coast of Java in the Indonesian Archipelago. The coloration and style of painting and carving is representative of the art of Madura. The face is carved in a rather simple but strong manner. The decorative floral background is a good illustration of Muslim art. This is an excellent example of how Indonesia, throughout its history, has uniquely managed to combine and keep the best and most colorful parts of the various waves of religion and culture that have conquered the region. In traditional Islam, realistic human and animal representation in art is not allowed. The combination of human and Islamic art together here illustrates Indonesia's unique and rich culture.
