Buddha on the Lotus - Hand Carved in Bali
The Buddha is a favorite subject of many carvers in Bali. Although the religion and culture in Bali is primarily Hindu, Buddha is considered to be a reincarnation of the Hindu God Vishnu and statues of Buddha can be seen in various Hindu temples on the island.
Carved in rain tree wood, the beneficent, tranquil Buddha meditates with the raised left hand in the gesture or mudra that wards off evil, while that of the right hand symbolizes meditation. The Buddha sits on a lotus flower with a lotus bud on each side.
