Garuda - Wayang Golek Mythical Creature

Vehicle of the Hindu God Vishnu, the Garuda is a mythical eagle-like bird, usually portrayed as part human. Also known as Jatayu. In the Ramayana epic the Garuda attempts to rescue Sita in midflight when she is abducted by the evil King Rawana. The Garuda also appears in the Mahabharata epic as a great bird with magical power. The Garuda is also the official emblem of Indonesia and a symbol of creativity.

This type of three-dimensional puppet is called Wayang Golek in Indonesia. The head can turn and the arms are manipulated by the bamboo sticks attached to the hands. The head and hands are painted, hand carved wood. The jacket is velveteen and trimmed with gold braid. The batik sarong is made from old batik fabric. Created in Central Java.
